The Man Behind
the Leather

Koos Lessing is a leather specialist, poet and beekeeper based in George, South Africa. Born and raised in the South African countryside, he learned from an early age to work with his hands. His passion for leatherwork began when his grandfather taught him how to cut and stitch a belt at the age of fourteen.

After years of self-teaching and training under established leather craftsmen, Koos founded Knapdoen — a name that perfectly captures his philosophy: if something is worth doing, it is worth doing properly.

Today Koos is known for his incredible attention to detail, his use of only the finest full-grain leather, and his ability to bring each client's unique vision to life. He crafts bespoke leather aprons, handmade whips, custom bags, belts, handgun holsters, long rifle bags, knife pouches and axe holders.

Beyond his workshop, Koos is a passionate beekeeper with more than 50 hives, and a poet who finds inspiration in the landscapes of the Garden Route.

“Knapdoen” —
More than Just a Name

The name “Knapdoen” comes from the Afrikaans idiom: if something is worth doing, it is worth doing properly. This philosophy drives every decision we make — from the leather we choose to the way we serve our clients.

We believe that handmade products are not just goods — they are stories, heirlooms and connections between people. Every piece that Koos makes and every artwork that Hannetjie creates carries a piece of their heart.
